Humble Beginnings of Happiness Centre
About

Pusat Kanak-Kanak Terencat Akal Bahagia is run on a 24 hour basis and is home to 30 residents with severe multiple disabilities. We are registered with the Welfare department and have the approval from the relevant government agencies such as the Fire Brigade, local council, Health department and the registration department.  Our resident’s ages range from 4 years to 39 years and most of them come from single-parent homes or very poor backgrounds. Some of them are also abandoned cases and as such, they are not able to subsidize their up-keep. In view of this we depend solely on public funds to maintain the Centre. This Centre was set-up in 2000 to cater to the low-income families who have no money to send their disabled children to paying centres.

We cater to all races, regardless of religion, we have as of today, 15 Chinese, 10 Malay and 5 Indian residents. Most of them are not able to fend for themselves even for their most basic needs and as such we employ caregivers to take care of them. We also have a physiotherapist and a nurse as we have residents who are on daily medications for ailments such as cerebral palsy, down syndrome, muscular dystrophy and mental retardation.  We also engage the services of panel doctors in and around the Centre.

We need continuous support as giving the best to these special children is costing us almost RM 22,000.00 ++ per month. Our vision is to provide a more conducive environment for the residents with more space and activity area with proper physiotherapy equipment and trained care-givers. We  want to not only provide care but to see that they also have a chance to improve and be reasonably independent. With the support from the public we are hoping to make this Pusat Kanak-Kanak Terencat Akal Bahagia or Happiness Centre, a one-stop place with the best in clinical care with abundance of love and tenderness. It will be a home away from home for the special individuals here.

In-fact with the care and love given to the residents we have managed to help two children who were able to go back to their families. Everything was made possible because of the generosity of the caring public, companies and corporations, who not only come once but keep coming back to support us. The media has also played a great role in highlighting our Centre from time to time especially China Press, Sin Chew Jit Poh. The residents and staff wish to thank all those who have helped us in one way or other.
